1. How do you describe your work?
Blend bold graphic images, bright splashes of colour, layers of texture and symbols & icons from around the world, then stir in some pieces of memory and bits of story and voilà, a piece of art is born.
2. What are your inspirations in your art and life?
I believe we inhabit our own personal stories. I believe we also live deep inside the stories of our elders. So, in a very real way we literally are our stories and our memories. Hand in hand with the stories comes the ephemera-the detritus of a life: a bowl full of shells from a day at the beach, sketches of different grasses from a marsh, the powdery remains of pressed roses from my grandmother’s garden, flowers painted from memory that were on a favourite vase of my great aunts, postage stamps pulled from letters written home from far away places, music from a student piano book I struggled through when I was 13, favourite fortunes saved from cookies and the maps of some of the places I have traveled to. My work is largely about my stories, as well as the stories I have heard from others: elements of story woven into the surfaces of a painting to create textures and layers that reflect all that exists beneath the surfaces of our own lives.
3. What do you do to help feed your soul?
Re-invigorate, re-charge, and re-member: Spending time by myself walking in the hills near my home with the wind and the birds and the trees all having their own conversations around me, spending time with friends laughing and telling each other our stories, being at home with my husband making meals, working in the garden, sharing and living our lives, and constantly reminding myself that we are all here to walk our own individual road and do our own particular piece of work on this earth.
