Autumn edition of TGIF

Autumn is in the air here and that means an end to the Indian Summer I’ve been loving. But Autumn isn’t all bad…at least it’s not winter. But seriously, I’m started to get into the Autumn spirit. I’m enjoying the beginnings of the fall foliage. I’m definitely into layering and being able to wear some cute jackets and sweaters. I’m also all about the apples from our local orchard and all the cooler weather veggies starting to come through in our CSA farm share (kale, winter squashes and soon some Brussels sprouts, I hope). I can’t wait to start baking again too, something I don’t do much of between April-Sept. Banana bread, oatmeal raisin cookies, pumpkin muffins, ginger snaps are all in my baking plans. I also find that I can once again coax Mr. Indie Fixx out of the house for an evening constitutional, something he doesn’t much enjoy in the summer. And then, there’s Halloween. The pumpkin carving, planning the costumes, hopefully a party to attend and the homemade vegan candy corn.

TGIF: Thank God for Illustration Friday – More color full art

This is my final installment in my series about illustrators who depict people of color in their art (here + here). Last month, I had a reader named Alexa who asked for some help in finding illustrators who have some diversity in their work. She likes artists like Belle & Boo, Hide n Seek & The Black Apple and was looking for artists with somewhat similar styles. I must say it’s been quite a challenge and I’m somewhat disappointed in my results. I just didn’t find as much as I thought I would.

So, I need your help:

If you know of some illustrators who portray people of color in their work, comment on this post. All hues of human are acceptable!
If you are an illustrator, consider creating work that’s a little more diverse and sharing it with me, I’d love to be able to do some more posts on this topic.

The Extent of Silence

American Beauty and not wishing your life away

Last night I was thinking about the movie American Beauty. Not so much because I think it’s the most awesomely movie ever made, but more so because it had a profound impact on my life. It was about 10 years ago and I was working in my first big important job after college as an archivist. It sucked big time. Not the work itself, but for my boss. She was a shrew who would throw Mommie Dearest tantrums if the patron pencils weren’t sharpened to a deadly point. I am not usually a crier and she made me cry. I also remember a few nights that I went home and drank until I was numb…not a good road to go down. I was miserable. Then I saw American Beauty, and I so identified with Lester Burnham that it scared me. I didn’t want to wake up one day at 40 and regret my life—I didn’t want to wake up any day and regret my life. This is the only game we get, there is no going back to GO and there is certainly no one throwing $200 at us either, so I became empowered and decided to take control. After a 2 week vacation, I marched into the shrew’s office and told her how difficult I found her to work with and that I wanted to change our working dynamic…not such a great idea. She said some really nasty things to me and it was then that I decided to leave. I couldn’t spend another minute working for someone who was so unhappy and whose main goal in life seemed to demean, belittle and tear down the people around her.

I gave my 2 weeks notice and I was out of there…with no job waiting for me either. Yea, I didn’t wait to find another job. I had been looking, but to no avail. Luckily, Mr. Indie Fixx had a job and was totally supportive of my decision. Now, we were poor, but I grew up poor, so I had that down. We had enough to pay the mortgage & for necessities, but we just had to live frugally and be creative with our entertainment (hello, library). Not such a bad thing at all and I had my life back. I was determined to never wish my life away again, like I had almost every day at that job, but resolved to deal with the bad shit and/or move on if that didn’t work. Life is to precious to waste.

Now, American Beauty (remember this was about the movie) is certainly not the only movie to have such a profound impact on me, but it certainly has been the only one so far that was so life-changing. But, there are plenty of movies that stick with me and I know you know what I mean. There are those movies that you find yourself identifying with in some way and that pop up in your thoughts often.

So, share with me. What movies have had an affect on your life or that you have identified with in some way?

A couple of weeks ago a reader contacted me for some help. She was looking for illustrators who depict people of color in their work. Alexa, the reader, is a fan of the artists Belle & Boo, Hide n Seek & The Black Apple. So, I had a task and a style of art and always up for a challenge, I was on the case!

Over the next weeks, I will be sharing my discoveries with you and Alexa. I do hope you enjoy and please feel free to share any artists that you may know of, I’d love to add to my list.

the pairabirds – I love illustrator Tabitha Bianca Brown’s minimalist multicultural profile pieces. naturally is my favorite, it is suggestive of the rest of her work….sweet, sensual and powerful.

c howard designs – This is really the only print in Christa Howard’s shop that fits in with my quest, but it’s just so lovely that I had to include it. I love the way the woman is standing, her arm, the flowing dress, the color…it’s beautiful.

kil sook – I’m sure that the work of Kim Haller is not new to you, especially since I’ve featured her before on Indie Fixx for the Feed Your Soul Project. Kim’s shop is full of work featuring people of all shades of human and is totally adorable!

danita – I’m sure that you have also come across Danita’s work once or twice as well. A mixed media artist, Danita creates paintings, mixed media pieces, art dolls, jewelry & more. A lot of her work features sweetly darling little brown girls. I am most definitely a fan and especially love her Frida series.

TGIF: Thank God for Illustration Friday – Snowy Art

Snow is magical to me…it always has been and always will be. It’s fleeting and ephemeral and blankets my world in sparkly mystery. Oh, to sit on the couch with some hot cocoa and watch it fall from the sky is truly one of my favorite things of all time. It doesn’t matter that I am now old enough to be responsible for the shoveling and scraping, or that the time for suspense over whether school will be canceled or not has passed me by, snow still captivates and excites me. There is just something so aesthetically pleasing about looking out at the world all covered in white. It’s just so beautiful & clean, at least until the snow plows come and the snow becomes stained black from car exhaust.

We had a little snow last night, just an inch or so, but what a wonderful sight to wake up to. Sometimes I wish it snowed more around here, but not really….it would be need to be colder longer then and I might become tired of the snow.
