Currently Crushing: a man’s perspective

April 11, 2011

currently crushing by danny brito

Hi! I’m Danny Brito, an illustrator living in Miami, Florida. I’m going to be doing a regular guest blog post over here on Indie Fixx for a while. I’m going to bringing you some of my favorite finds whether it be from other artists or just great thrifted items that I’ve found. No theme, just going with it! Hope you enjoy what I’m currently crushing on.

Since my first post was kind of girl-oriented, I thought I’d put a man’s perspective on Currently Crushing this time around.

First up is this simple and fun “fake” watch by Eva Monle—n of Misako Mimoko, the little clock face is porcelain!

I love, love, love this. Plush for Dudes, this is a set of a little chain saw and a severed hand by Stef Bomb, you also have the option of buying the two separately. Make sure you see the rest of the shop, there’s also a plush pizza I wouldn’t mind owning some day.

This beer cozy is by artist Deth P. Sun, it puts a really rad artsy spin one something as simple as a beer cozy.

Bullet necklaces are kind of popular right now, but I don’t really see many masculine ones very often, Eddie Schoeck is a local to south Florida shop owner and he uses a lot of darker crystals that I think put a masculine spin on the bullet necklace. Plus they’re super affordable and he’s a pretty cool guy. Make sure to check out his shop, the party dream, because he has some sweet pocket mirrors as well as other types of crystal necklaces.

I feel like I’ve been a fan of Matt Cipov for ever and ever. I don’t know if I would classify his art as specifically for men, but it definitely has a dark vibe to it that I love. This Pug mask print is an obvious favorite of mine as I’m an avid pug lover. I actually just finished buying it, so hopefully he has more re-listed by the time this is posted.

This is a lovely digital poster print by Neil J Rook, a London-based artist and designer. It’s called “Deep Blue Sea” and looks so lovely all framed up! It’s got a lovely rustic nautical feel to it, but is still really illustratively and fun. Check out the rest of shop for postcards and other poster prints.

I’ve had my eye on this Rucksack by Abby Meadow of Infusion for ages, it’s literally the perfect back pack. I love that it’s completely handmade, I hope to own it one day and fill it with cameras for adventures.

I went on to Cat Rabbit Plush’s shop to find a kind of dorky plush with fun nerdy glasses for this post but instead found this awesome wooden badger cufflinks! They’re limited edition and come in a lovely printed box.

These Harry Potter-esque shirts by Evie Tees are next on my shopping list, I totally need one of these for the Premiere of the next movie, I’m just not sure if I want to go with evil or good! They have tons of other Wizard themed goodies on their shop, make sure to check it out.

This is a perfect tshirt for a girlfriend looking for a gift for their boyfriend, albeit the boyfriend needs to have a beard and glasses.. but I think every man should have a beard and glasses. So if you fit the description, this shirt by Sarah of egg-a-go-go is for you!

Last but not least, is a little pocket journal with an embroidered cat shooting laser beams out of its eyes. Enough Said!

That’s all folks, hope you enjoyed this post. Until next time…

Designer’s Sketchbook: Emily from mchen wears

March 23, 2010

designerssketchbooklogo21.jpg

You guys really seem to be enjoying the Designer’s Sketchbook feature and I’m glad, it’s some real fun for me as well! For today’s edition, Emily Chen of Mchen Wears, a fun & quirky screenprinted tee shirt line, shares some pages from her sketchbook. Emily also shares some of her inspirations and what her creative process is like.

1. Can you share what inspires you in your design creation?

Many of my designs come from wordplay and coming up with different ways of looking at words. I over think just about everything, so I feed off anything from everyday life to dreams, from what I hear on the news to other people’s art.

2. What’s your creative process like?

Endless list-making and doodling, with a lot of my best ideas occurring to me just before I fall asleep or wake up. Almost all the brainstorming is done with paper and pen, but all the final artwork is done on my computer.

3. How long from from an idea to finished tee?

Some designs are spontaneous and occur right as I’m working on my computer (I love my Wacom Cintiq 21UX :) Others brew for months in my sketchbook and brain. I tend to work on the tees in fits and starts, since my day job (I’m a freelance designer/illustrator) and life can sometimes take over; as a result, my creative process is interrupted frequently.

4. Do you use all the ideas & sketches you come up with or do you or weed your ideas before bringing them to fruition?

I have pages of ideas that haven’t seen the light of day – some will never make it onto a tee, but many are just waiting for me to get around to them. I edit myself a lot; because silkscreening is such an involved and long process, I have to really love and believe in a design to carry it out all the way.

5. What’s been your favorite design that you’ve created so far?

That’s a tough one, since many are meaningful in their own way. The re[CAP] design is especially close to my heart because I absolutely adore chickadees. The first song my husband John and I danced to at our wedding was “Chickadee” by Meredith Luce, and we love going out to feed them at a local park (they come sit on our heads!). On top of that, John was the one who actually came up with the concept for the illustration, so it’s just a very mooshy feel-good design for me.

Do you have a difficult guy to shop for?

February 18, 2010

My brother’s birthday is coming up at the end of the month (which is fast approaching, I know) and I still haven’t gotten him anything.  Guys can be so difficult to shop for, especially ones like my brother. If he wants something, he pretty much goes out and gets it. I usually try to get him something that he would never buy for himself and that no one else would buy for him either. One year it was a ‘We are so doomed’ Tee from I like Seamonsters and another year it was some prints from Eleanor Grosch. This year?  I just don’t know.

Since I’m sure you have some guys in your life, just as difficult to shop for as my brother, I put together a little of collection of gifts for guys from the Winter Love Galleria.
