Multitasking…my thoughts

October 21, 2009

multitaksingcathygaubert2.jpg

We all do it. No, not quilt while driving, but multitask. Listening to This American Life while crafting, waiting on hold while getting the bills ready for the mail, helping the kids with homework while making dinner. It’s an inevitable and sometimes necessary part of life. But, I’ve been wondering lately, is it always necessary? And to what extent is it necessary? Certainly, there are only so many hours in the day and so much that needs to get done, but is it really necessary for me to be tweeting while answering email while listening to pandora while talking on the phone with the insurance company? Probably not necessary at all and not even a good idea.

Lately, I’ve really been thinking about multitasking and whether it’s really something that I need to be doing as often I end up doing it. Sometimes, I feel like I’m that proverbial rat on a treadmill and I think I want to get off. I find that it’s the media multitasking that I most abuse and I’ve decided to make some changes. No, I’m not giving up twitter (omg, no), but I am planning on spending a little more time savoring those things in life that are a little more real & tangible. Things like going for a walk and savoring the smell of wet autumn leaves on the pavement (& not listening to my iPod while doing it) or just knitting on the couch with a kitty on my lap (without the tv on in the background).

What about you? What are your thoughts on multitasking? Is it good, bad, necessary?  I’m planning on posting regularly about this topic…my own struggles with trying to shed my bad multitasking habits as well as your stories and images.  Do you have some stories, images, thoughts you want to share about multitasking, drop me a line.

The image above is from Cathy Gaubert and no, she wasn’t actually quilting while driving, but was waiting in the carpool line for her daughter.   She is a busy momma who still finds the time to make crafty things…and I’m sure she does her fair share of multitasking! You can learn more about Cathy on her blog and see her crafty wares in her Etsy Shop.

Virtual Intern Search for Fall 2009

July 11, 2009

internsearchlogo.jpg

I am on the search for two virtual interns for Fall 2009.

Responsibilities will include:

  1. Help me research stories.
  2. Help me coordinate a variety of projects—which mostly involves contacting artists, scheduling, organizing details.
  3. Respond to email!
  4. Writing assignments…both assigned and those based on your own interests.
  5. Other stuff that comes up.

Workload will be about 8 hours a week.

There is absolutely no pay,  but the glory, oh the glory…

If you are interested, email me at jen@indiefixx.com with a brief note about why you are interested in being my intern and a quick little resume as well. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone who may be interested.

For a student, I’d be happy to write a letter of recommendation after a successful internship. I’d also be happy to promote projects that the intern may be working on personally.

I will collect resumes until the middle of August and get back to those who I’d like to interview after that. Please note that this is a virtual internship, so your location does not matter, but you must be super self-motivated. Also, if you applied for the summer, please feel free to apply again!

More kicking up the dust…

July 06, 2009

Remember back here I talked about making some changes around here? Well, I am still working on all that. One recent  change, I’m not sure if you have noticed or not, is the new background…not a huge change, but it does freshens things I a bit.

Anyway, here are a couple of polls for you to answer that may be helpful to me. I know it’s all a little cryptic, but secrets usually are. ;)

Btw, Some Clever Spoon is my food blog in case you didn’t know.

Meet the new interns!

June 24, 2009

Remember back here I put a call out for a virtual intern? Well, after 2 weeks and over 20 applications, I have found my Summer 09 interns!  Yay! I have decided to go with 2 interns as they are both super qualified, super nice and super sweet and I probably have enough work for an army of interns.

Please join me in welcoming them to Indie Fixx!

Alexa is a student at Oregon State University with a triple major and an interest in crafting and learning about indie artists and designers. She also started Project Earth, a student group whose goal is to strengthen international and local rural communities through innovative social enterprises and youth entrepreneurship education. She will be working on scheduling interviews for the Wednesday Indie Artist Fixx series among other things. I’m very excited to be working with her.

Amy is a student at Northwestern University who just finished up an internship at Sunset Mag. She has wanted to be a journalist since she was just 5 years old and she is also into the indie design and crafting scene as well. She will be helping me coordinate Feed Your Soul: the free art project and other stuff as well. I am also excited to be working with her as well.

Both Amy & Alexa will be helping me answer email and will be contacting indie artists, crafters, designers and shop owners on my behalf, so don’t be surprised if you here from them and not me!

I am also accepting for Fall 09’s virtual interns. See here for an idea of the duties. Email me a note about why you would like to intern for Indie Fixx as well as your resume. I will collect applications until about mid-August.
