Weekly Photo Challenge: Homemade – you decide the winner!

November 28, 2010

weekly photograph challenge flickr

I need your help in choosing the winner for last week’s Weekly Photo Challenge! The Weekly Photo Challenge is a fun new feature for which I will periodically put out a photo challenge calling for you to upload photos around a particular theme to the Indie Fixx Flickr group. Then you will have a week to get your photo taken and added to the Group. The idea is provide you with a venue to show off & offer up some inspiration for everyone involved. Sometimes, just to add a little bit more fun, I will offer up a prize!

Last week’s theme was HOMEMADE and the prize was for a winner’s choice Soldered Pendant Necklace from The Broken Plate Pendant Company ($45).

The entry period for last week’s challenge is over, but you can help me choose the winner, since I can’t decide who should win.

I picked my top 3 entries and I want you to vote on who you think should win. See the entries below and then vote in the poll at the bottom of this post. The poll will close on December 1st at 11:59 pm EST and the winner will be the entrant with the highest number of votes at that time.

Weekly Photo Challenge: a new feature + a prize!

November 22, 2010

weekly photo challenge

Weekly Photo Challenge is a fun new feature that I am debuting today. Periodically, I will put out a photo challenge calling for you to upload photos around a particular theme to the Indie Fixx Flickr group.  Then you will have a week to get your photo taken and added to the Group. The idea is provide you with a venue to show off & offer up some inspiration for everyone involved. Sometimes,  just to add a little bit more fun, I will offer up a prize! Does this sound like fun to you? Read how to get involved below.

This week’s theme is: Homemade

Homemade made sense to me as a theme, since I figured with the Thanksgiving holiday many of you would be making plenty of homemade stuff (or at least folks in the US anyway). You can interpret Homemade any you want to:  share a pie you made made, your handmade holiday cards, a wooly scarf you completed,  your homemade Thanksgiving table place cards or anything that’s made by you.  Wow us with your creativity and your skillz!

Prize:

2. Make sure to tag it with the following: “homemade weekly photo challenge” or homemadeweeklyphotochallenge.

3. The winner will be notified via Flickr Mail after November 29th.

4. Multiple entries will be considered.

5. Open to US and International entries.

{{Special Collections}}

November 01, 2010

I am fascinated collectors and their collections. I guess it’s the curator + archivist in me, since I am not much of a collector myself (I did work as an assistant curator and archivist prior to Indie Fixx, after all). Although, I would argue that even those of us who would not call ourselves collectors are in fact such. How else could our homes be filled with such stuff if we didn’t collect? Even it’s not done with the specific intent of making a collection, we are at least making one big collection…the collection of our lives. That is certainly the way curators and archivists look at out stuff. Special Collections, anyone?

To me, there are so many interesting questions about collecting. Does the person consider themselves a collector or not? Obviously someone who goes out to flea markets looking for milk glass, probably would consider themselves a collector. But what about the person who haphazardly picks up rocks and shells from a lifetime of walks along the beach?

What people choose to collect is just so interesting to me. From the mundane, to the obscure. Everyday objects, natural history specimens, kitschy pop-culture, historical artifacts….the who, why, what, how is just so darn fascinating!

That’s why,  all this week I’m going to be sharing various collections with you. From the general to the specific, they will all be things that caught my eye.  Please feel free to comment about what you collect, what you’d like to collect, what you thing about these collections or whatever you want to share on this post or any of this week’s posts!  And also, do share pics of your collections with us via the Indie Fixx Flickr Group!

Today, I’m sharing a collection I put together of items that are popularly collected.
