Fashion Photography Inspiration from Sade Williams

June 30, 2011

All this week I’ve been working on putting together issue #5 of Joie magazine….you’ve probably seen my calls for contributors. I’ve had a lot of eponse from writers, but I am really looking for ore photographers to create photo essays and artists to illustrate some of the articles and provide background artwork as well. So, if you are an artist or a photographer, get in touch if you want more info on contributing. Email me at jen@indiefixx.com.

One of the photographers from the last issue is Sade Williams. Sade is a fashion and editorial photographer based in L.A. and she’s actually contributed to two issues of Joie now, but I really love her shoot for issue #4. It’s so dreamy. Take a look for yourself….

Here’s a fashion video from the shoot as well.

And here’s some of Sade’s latest work…just lovely.

I’m a little behind, but I’m finally on the Hipstamatic band wagon

June 03, 2011

I’ve recently joined the masses of people who own an iPhone. I’ve had a string of really bad luck with phones, my last 3 phones have been total pieces of crap and my last phone was even on some lists for the worst phones of 2010. It actually started randomly rebooting itself…about 20 times a day, which made it pretty much worthless. Faced with choosing another nightmare, I decided to go with a phone that’s among the most popular, hoping that would work in my favor, and so I chose the iPhone. I’ve been in a haze of free (and some not so free) apps ever since. Plus, it’s really freaking nice to been able to get through a call without my phone rebooting itself.

Among my favorite apps are the photography ones–Instagram and Hipstamatic are the ones I’ve been playing around with the most. Readymade magazine actually has an article this month about the best iPhone photography apps and I’m planning on checking those out as well.

Here’s some of my recent Hipstamatic images (I think a couple are Instagrams too). All images were taken around my home.

Inspiration: Swan Lake

April 13, 2011

Swan Lake ballet by Pennsylvania ballet
{{photo from Pennsylvania Ballet}}

Last month Indie Fixx Jr. and I went to see Swan Lake by the Pennsylvania Ballet in Philadelphia and the Academy of Music. We have only ever seen The Nutcracker in the past, which we love, and for several years now we’ve been saying we need to see some other ballets to find out if we love the art form or just that particular ballet. When I saw that the PA Ballet was putting on Swan Lake I thought another Tchaikovsky ballet might be a perfect one for us to experience. Plus, we both wanted to see the ballet before waking the the Black Swan movie. We are both the type that want to read the book before the movie, so why not see the ballet before the movie?

Well, are we ever glad we did, because we both absolutely loved it! The whole ballet was a delight, but the 4th Act was stunningly beautiful and so tragic. I don’t know about Jr., but I cried a little. Our mother-daughter evening was fun as well and I’m so glad I have a daughter who likes to try new things with me. I’m a lucky mom. ;)

After seeing Swan Lake, we also watched the movie Black Swan…not as much in love with that, but it had its moments. Actually we both spent a good part of the movie covering up our eyes from all the gross & gory parts. Jr. and I are so alike sometimes it’s scary…neither of us can stand scary and gory movies…even if they are based on a ballet!

In the weeks since seeing Swan Lake, I’ve also found myself daydreaming about it and remembering little bits in my mind and humming along. The costumes, choreography, music and story were just so dreamy that I can’t help myself. I can’t wait to see it again sometime in the future.

In the meantime, I’ve found myself looking to flickr for inspiration. Here’s some of what I found.

eye candy and inspiration

April 06, 2011

I promised I would share some of my pictures with you from my recent trip to a local garden and conservatory center. I like to go at least once a year, but usually go more to experience the changing seasons.  I went last week to spend some time with Indie Fxx Jr., who was on spring break, and to enjoy a lately rare sunny day.

I also wanted to find some inspiration for my creative projects, including my Sketchbook Delight homework. I found plenty to be inspired by and had lots of fun playing around with my images applying various effects.

What do you think? Do you like my pics?

Are you inspired by them?

Creativity Corner: inspiration and motivation

March 29, 2011

creativity corner: adding creativity to your life

I hope you were inspired by my last column to create your own creativity challenge. This time,  I want to talk about how to stay inspired and motivated when you’re undertaking your challenge, no matter what it is.

Over the course of the last 40 or so weeks, I’ve had many days when the last thing I’ve felt like doing is making something. As I said last time, part of overcoming this is to tell others what you’re doing. This public accountability will mean you won’t want to fail your challenge.

The other big key to keeping you going is to seek inspiration from all around you – both online and away from your computer – to guide and help you when you’re in a creativity sticky rut.

Online inspiration is everywhere…

pinterest

You can seek and gather inspiration from all over the world from your computer or phone and this is certainly a valuable way to get ideas. I often use tutorials I’ve seen via blogs and websites for inspiration in my own project.

Pinterest is an excellent way to hunt down inspiring images, as well as collating your own galleries, as you can follow other people’s boards and re-pin their favourites.

A word of caution with using online inspiration. Remember that copying is never cool, unless it’s a tutorial and even then follow the author’s guidelines for using it. Make sure you fully credit any sources you use.

Read all about it…

craft books

I love craft books and magazines and I have a huge stash of them. But you could also use design, food and gardening magazines for inspiration – imagine drawing a page full of beautiful spring flowers from a magazine. You could pin up your favourite images on an inspiration board, stick them on your studio wall or save them in a journal.

Snap happy…

Get out and about with your camera (or phone) and take lots of photos of interesting flowers, plants, architecture, graffiti or anything that catches your eye. You can then use them to inspire colour schemes, patterns or full blown pieces of art. Plus it’s good to get some fresh air and away from the empty drawing board.

Sketchy…

I recommend keeping a sketchbook or journal so you can scribble or sketch down ideas and thoughts when they strike you. You can then refer back to it when you just have no idea where to start. I admit to being very bad at this so I’ve just joined an online sketchbook class run by the very talented Alisa Burke to kickstart my sketching journey.

a creative challenge… yourself! (creativity & inspiration)

March 25, 2011

Before you read Claudia’s 1st post, I’d like to invite you to visit the Regular Guest Contributors’ page to read about all of my new guest bloggers. I’m so excited to be sharing so many new voices here on Indie Fixx! xoxo- jen

it's up to you

Hello there, friends. How are you doing today? I am Claudia from {a place for twiggs} blog and I will join you over the next few months for sharing the column It’s Up to You!. My stories will cover several topics that are crucial for your leading a creative & happy life. Today, I will focus on a particular topic that it might interest you.

But first, a question. Are you feeling creative today? Do you recognize a creative day? Do you ever feel not in a creative mood?

Well, I believe that several answers might be possible to these questions. And in today’s post, {A Creative Challenge… Yourself}, I will share some of those answers.

What is Creativity anyway?

“…the phenomenon whereby a person creates something new (a product, a solution, a work of art etc.) that has some kind of value. What counts as “new” may be in reference to the individual creator, or to the society or domain within which the novelty occurs. What counts as “valuable” is similarly defined in a variety of ways.” – wikiepedia

Have you noticed something in this definition? Creativity has to do with something {new} and {valuable}. That is why being yourself is so important, because being creative also means creating something new for you, for the world… with some kind of value. And how about inspiration?

Can you define inspiration? Inspiration is what leads us to creativity.

“Inspiration refers to an unconscious burst of creativity in a literary, musical, or other artistic endeavor. Literally, the word means “breathed upon.””- wikiepedia

Isn’t this the most refreshing definition ever? Inspiration means breathed upon, like if your mind has received some fresh air… and you had a stunning idea .

This is inspiration… what you do with it is creativity. So, when do these two things happen? And what to do when they occur? And how about when they do not occur?

Well, I will tell you a little story based on a very simple question.

What is your favorite thing to do in the whole world?

One of my favorite things in the whole world is to wander around Lisbon with two cameras, a digital one and a film one. And of course… on a sunny day, which is easy in Lisbon. Why do I love to do this? Because it relaxes me and keeps my mind fresh, without any particular thoughts. Just like the wind, I wander around streets, exploring corners… new ones… old ones… I don’t have a schedule… nor is time  important. I usually get on a tram and just go with it… this helps me to keep my mind relaxed. And this is a crucial thing for feeling inspired.

What inspires you?

If you ask your creative friends, what inspires them, most of them will answer “everything that surrounds me.” Why is this? Because the world is happening before your eyes… every day. And an inspirational mind keeps the heart open to the world that is happening. Feeling inspired means “breathed upon”, means keeping your mind fresh and refreshed… and keeping this in mind will keep your creativity happening more regularly.

Creativity is like Love!

Creativity is not something that you can schedule. This also means that you cannot expect to feel creative at a certain time of the day. But it surely does depends on you. So how to improve your creative days? Feeling relaxed… doing things that you love to do and that make you feel happy and inspired. This is a lot like love. It never happens when we want it to, but when we are least expecting it to. We just need to keep up with our lives, embracing everything that comes along and love will come to us. We just need to keep our hearts open to it. Exactly like creativity…you just need to keep your heart and mind open to it. Forcing it, will perhaps,  be a mistake.

But there something else to keep in mind. Just like love that happens when you are not expecting, inspiration also comes when you are not expecting it . And like love, you need to do something, when it appears. So… my little piece of advice… get a notebook and a pencil. And write or draw your ideas exactly in the moment they arrive.

Inspiration or copy?

And when inspiration comes from other artists? That is so common, right? We all admire certain artists that inspire us. But then again, we need to be true to ourselves. They inspire us and they may lead us to do something creative with that inspiration. But how may I know that this is my work and not some inspired copy of someone’s work? Well… I will tell you something… only you can know that. But in order to be successful and a relaxed mind and heart, you also need to be true to yourself. So, when you look at your work, what do you see?

bridge photograph by twiggs

And with this, I mean that inspiration may come from other artists, but only I can take that inspiration and do something creative with it if  it has my name written on it. You will not want to have someone saying “oh this really looks like that lady’s work!” You want to stand out for yourself, right? So… feel inspired to do something new… to stand out in the world. There is a place for all of us… if we just keep our work fresh and true. So… challenge yourself to feel inspired… to be a creative person.
