2 Girls, a Boston Terrier, Gemma Correll and Some Pugs!

April 29, 2010

allmighty8.jpg

You know I’m a cat person..I started the Indie Cats Flickr Group after all, but I do love the work of artist Gemma Correll and I know that some of you are dog people. That’s why I decided to feature All-Mighty,  a shop that sells cute mighty dog themed illustrated tees, accessories & gifts as well as clothing.

The All-Mighty group, made up of two sisters and a Boston Terrier named Mighty, recently teamed up with Gemma Correll who is a self-professed Pug lover and creator of Pug art. Gemma created some Pug designs that are exclusive to the shop, and which are just totally adorable. The shop also carries some of Gemma’s Pug Not Drugs totes as well. They make a wonderful complement to the Boston Terrier goodies!

Designer’s Sketchbook: Emily from mchen wears

March 23, 2010

designerssketchbooklogo21.jpg

You guys really seem to be enjoying the Designer’s Sketchbook feature and I’m glad, it’s some real fun for me as well! For today’s edition, Emily Chen of Mchen Wears, a fun & quirky screenprinted tee shirt line, shares some pages from her sketchbook. Emily also shares some of her inspirations and what her creative process is like.

4-recapdesignprocess.jpg

1. Can you share what inspires you in your design creation?

Many of my designs come from wordplay and coming up with different ways of looking at words. I over think just about everything, so I feed off anything from everyday life to dreams, from what I hear on the news to other people’s art.

2. What’s your creative process like?

Endless list-making and doodling, with a lot of my best ideas occurring to me just before I fall asleep or wake up. Almost all the brainstorming is done with paper and pen, but all the final artwork is done on my computer.

3. How long from from an idea to finished tee?

Some designs are spontaneous and occur right as I’m working on my computer (I love my Wacom Cintiq 21UX :) Others brew for months in my sketchbook and brain. I tend to work on the tees in fits and starts, since my day job (I’m a freelance designer/illustrator) and life can sometimes take over; as a result, my creative process is interrupted frequently.

4. Do you use all the ideas & sketches you come up with or do you or weed your ideas before bringing them to fruition?

I have pages of ideas that haven’t seen the light of day – some will never make it onto a tee, but many are just waiting for me to get around to them. I edit myself a lot; because silkscreening is such an involved and long process, I have to really love and believe in a design to carry it out all the way.

5. What’s been your favorite design that you’ve created so far?

That’s a tough one, since many are meaningful in their own way. The re[CAP] design is especially close to my heart because I absolutely adore chickadees. The first song my husband John and I danced to at our wedding was “Chickadee” by Meredith Luce, and we love going out to feed them at a local park (they come sit on our heads!). On top of that, John was the one who actually came up with the concept for the illustration, so it’s just a very mooshy feel-good design for me.

Bunny Breath Vintage Wears

July 14, 2009

bunnybreathmontage.jpg

Visit Bunny Breath for some pretty vintage summer dresses.  Bunny Breath is run by Sue Eggen of Giant Dwarf (love my Giant Dwarf Handbag). Sue has a real love of vintage fashion and I recently sat down with her for a mini interview about vintage fashion.

Use the code fixx over at Bunny Breath at checkout and save 20% until the end of July!

1. Why vintage clothing? How did you get started and why do you like to wear vintage?

Vintage clothing, in my opinion, is a way to express who you are through fashion and style, by reliving the trends of the past. It’s an opportunity to wear a one-of-a-kind piece of clothing, in which only one or a few are still left in existence. Most importantly, it’s also a way to bypass mass production, recycle fashionably, and quite possibly, save money.

The idea to start wearing vintage was permanently ingrained when my mom took me to see “Pretty In Pink,”  starring the lovely Molly Ringwald, back in 1986. I was 10 years old and I wanted to be Ringwald’s character, Andie Walsh. She wore vintage, made her own clothes, and she drove a vintage car, a Volkswagen Karmen Ghia.

Hallelujah for She-Bible

July 13, 2009

Hell’s bells, it’s starting to get hot now that summer is here to my neck of the planet. When it’s super hot, I like to wear skirts and dresses, since I find them so much cooler and I just don’t do shorts. I like my dresses to be girlie, but not froufrou, and I prefer slightly form-fitting as those flowy things just don’t do me any good. I also like girlie colors like plum, pink, purple & teal and I don’t really wear prints. Plus, I am all about organic fabrics like hemp and cotton. Hmmm, looks like She-bible has got me covered. Hallelujah for She-bible!
