An Indie Holiday Story: Nicole from Craftapalooza

December 19, 2008

craftapalooza_holiday.jpg

Nicole of Craftapalooza shares her An Indie Holiday Story. Nicole is from Perth, Australia and I am always just a little fascinated by how the other half (the other hemisphere) celebrate Christmas, when I think of it as all snowy and cold.  It’s a little kid’s fascination, I realize, but some things you never get over learning in school.

Nicole shares her gorgeous silver tree & some of what Christmas is all about to her.

1. What is your favorite holiday tradition.

Baking, making and gifting.

2. Share a story behind a special ornament on your tree.

The little sheep, I’m assuming it’s vintage and came from my back-tack 4 partner and it’s completely adorable.

3. All you want from Santa is….?

Christmas with my partner Sondra and our fur kids, Ted and Spud.

4. Your favorite Christmas movie and why?

Usually ANY musical involving Doris Day or Elvis. Doesn’t have to be about Christmas!

5. The best toy you ever got when you were a kid.

My barbie and her horse!

6. Why is Christmas special to you?

It’s a time of year when life slows down a little, when I get to reflect on the year just passed and spend time with friends.

An Indie Holiday Story: Nikki from bumble and lu

December 19, 2008

It’s getting closer to Christmas, Hanukkah & the Winter Solstice!  It’s so exciting I can’t wait. And, here is another An Indie Holiday Story for you this Friday before the holidays.  It’s from Nikki from bumbles & lu. Nikkie made the lovely ornaments above for the Freshly Baked and Cake & Pie’s Third Annual Holiday Ornament Swap and you can read about her process here.

Now, Nikki shares a couple of things that are special to her about the holidays.

1. What’s your favorite holiday cookie?

My favorite cookie recipe is Oatmeal Scotties – Betty Crocker’s oatmeal cookie recipe, minus the cinnamon with butterscotch chips substituted for raisins.

2. Are you doing anything special for the holidays this year?

My holiday plans this year – I got married in October and I’m heading to my parents in Charleston, SC to have a meet & greet reception with all the folks that couldn’t make it to Texas for the wedding. It’ll be the first time I’ve spent the holidays with my family for 3 years – I’m nervous & excited to see everyone.

An Indie Holiday Story: Hannah from Made With Love by Hannah

December 18, 2008

Another An Indie Holiday Story . . . Hannah from Made With Love from Hannah shares how to make these cute felt and ricrack hearts. I think they would be so much fun on the tree!

Hannah also shares some of what makes Christmas special to her.

My favorite holiday tradition, which I haven’t done since I moved away from Boston, was making gingerbread and sugar cookies every year with my girlfriends and having so much fun decorating them. Now, maybe my favorite holiday tradition is when the Soy Nog hits the shelves!  Also, the best toy I ever got as a kid was a giant stuffed lion I called Leo (so original, I know!) I think I was about 5 when I got him and he was a big as me, so that was quite a thrill! Finally, my New Year’s resolution this year is to be more organized (again, so original!), especially in my workroom, it’s embarrassingly messy! I always have to make excuses for myself when someone comes over and sees it.

An Indie Holiday Story: Jennifer from swallowfield

December 17, 2008

I know this isn’t really isn’t home decor in the tradition sense, but the Earth is our home and this is totally applicable to the season!  This image is from Jennifer of swallowfield and she created this scene at a place called Popham Beach in Maine.  Just beautiful!

Jennifer shared with me that her favorite holiday move is love actually. She writes, “I’ve seen it over and over! It is the best mix of total schmaltz and great acting, with a fun soundtrack. My copy started skipping this year, so I’ve been watching a few bits online.”

What is your favorite holiday movie?  Leave a comment below!
