After six years of this blog, I am toying with the idea of changing the name.
Yes, I know that is a huge branding no-no, but back when I created this blog in August 2006, I never thought it would be as popular as it ended up being. I created it on a lark…a whim…in a moment of spontaneity. At the time, I was thinking it could be a good way to promote my own independent jewelry making business (which no longer exists now) and that it might be a bit of fun. It’s actually been loads of fun and it grew beyond my wildest expectations, but to be honest with you…I never really liked the name.
Because I created it in a fit of spontaneity, I didn’t really spend a lot of time on coming up with a name. I thought, “Hmm, I’m having trouble coming up with a name, I’ll just name it Indie Fixx for now…I can always change it.” Then, BAM, my blog got popular right away and it never seemed the right time to change the name.
So, why now? Why not? Life’s too short to go around with a blog name that I’m not completely happy with.
But I’m not doing THIS spontaneously. I’m gong to ruminate on it. Sleep on it. Mull it around a bit. And, I’m going to ask YOU what you think.
So, what do you think?
Is it a good idea to change the name of this blog from
Indie Fixx to…..something else to be determined?
Vote in my poll below.
This is something I’m currently struggling with. My advertising and branding background screams “noooooooooo, horrible idea,” but I’m just not into the name anymore.
I’m with Erin – if you have something specific in mind THAT RESONATES WITH YOUR DIRECTION, then by all means change it – Prince changed his name a few times, but everyone still knows who he is and he is still seen as enigmatic and incredibly talented. If you’re going to change, certainly have a plan for the transition; get the word out there as big as you can to accommodate the changes as they happen.
I voted ‘no’ not because I think that you shouldn’t change the blog name out of fear of loosing your followers, but because I really like the name ‘Indie Fixx’ and I think it suits your blog… 😉
Yes, but not by much. You got the fox there, why not Indie Foxx? Thinking about, say, firedoglake. That’s some name to be stuck with. They’ve evolved to FDL, which is pretty good. So how about, InFX. That doesn’t work…IndieBiz. IndieCraft. I think independent business is key, Indie is understood as independent, free of evil influence…so keep that part. Maybe IndieCraft.biz..
I’m a firm supporter on making changes when you know the changes will make you happy(or even more so than you are already). If you were able to advertise, forward links, etc in advance, it might not be so bad. And aren’t rules for breaking?
It might be rough at first, but a name can say a lot and draw people in too, so maybe there is an even better name out there for you… I think your next poll should be, stay as Indie Fixx or change to ___?
i’m pretty sure no blog owner loves the name of their blog (going home to roost?!). haha. i even heard sfgirlbybay talk about the same thing, but i love both of your names! i think we tend to look the pretty off things, but our readers know us for it, resonate with it and love us for it (i think). 🙂
