  1. Hi Jen,
Saw your post about Pittsburgh – I bought a house there last fall and have been slowly fixing it up. It’s a great city!

Some recommendations – most of these places are on FaceBook:
EAT and drink adult beverages: Round Corner Cantina in Lawrenceville (home to lots of small galleries and boutiques)
EAT and drink caffeinated beverages: Lili Coffee Shop in Polish Hill (the church is incredible and the community tree is decorated with dozens of home-made birdhouses)
Mattress Factory has mind-bending conceptual art and the neighborhood is an eclectic one
http://www.popcitymedia.com/ is a great resource for things happening around the city – art, theater, dance…

The Carson St. area on the South Side has totally exploded in recent years – there’s still fun bars/the Beehive coffee shop, and other shops but it’s become very popular and a bit over the top with college
    students and 20-somethings.

Hope this helps – if there’s something specific you’re looking for let me know (I tried to send this to your email address but kept getting delivery failure notices) – I follow tons of P-burgh FB pages/blogs – so I’d be happy to
point you to something more specific.

Oh… one last thing – hotels. It’s EXPENSIVE to stay in the downtown area, and you often have to pay to put your car in a garage. When I go out there, I typically get good Priceline deals in Monroeville. It’s about 20minutes outside the city, but it’s
worth it for $55/night. I’d avoid staying near the airport as the traffic is hellacious from that direction. However, if this is a special occasion, splurging and staying downtown or near the
    universities could certainly be fun.

Have a great time! Laura Z.

  2. I moved to Pgh about 6 months ago. We lived at the Westin downtown, very convenient location. You can walk to the strip district, which is full of lots of wonderful independent restaurants. It is also a convenient location to walk to Market Square, also good for going to eat or drinks. We love the Carnegie Museum, Mattress Factory (cool installation art), Frick Art Museum, Clayton Mansion (gilded-era mansion), Phipps Conservatory (our favorite), and the Andy Warhol Museum. Our plans this weekend include investigating a famous place: the Milkshake Shop on the South Side. We have done the Duck Tours and find them corny but fun, and there are many theaters in the cultural district. We haven’t yet explored them, but folks say the bike trails are really great. Beware, Saturday rain is predicted but the weather has been really wonderful.

  3. I am from Pittsburgh! You should eat at Yo Rita for great tacos and Zenith for vegetarian food and antiques. You can’t eat the antiques, tho! haha. I also love Spice Island in Oakland for great Asian influenced food. The Beehive is open late for coffee and tea.

My favorite places to visit are the Warhol Museum and the Carnegie Museum. Phipps is great for flower and plant watching. I love the aviary, too. A place you will for sure love is Society for Contemporary Craft. It is a gallery and gift shop with local and national artists.
