Izzy’s got a spot on her eye

I’m sharing some sad news with you today…Isabella has what the vet is pretty sure is melanoma in her eye. I noticed a small spot a few months ago and last week I noticed that it had grown bigger  and that didn’t seem like a good thing, so yesterday I packaged her off to the vet. It’s very small, but he’s pretty sure that it’s melanoma. He did a bunch of blood work to see if anything’s not working the way it should and said we will go from there. He most likely will end of referring me to a local eye specialist.

Needless to say that I was a wreck of a kitty mama after getting us both home yesterday. It’s a little too early to tell how this will all play out, but please keep us in your thoughts. Izzy is my sweet baby.

Here she is last week with her spot. It’s showing up as just the tiniest thing in this pic, but it’s actually a little larger and blacker than that in real life.

Here she is a couple of years ago sans spot.

Lazing under the rug…she thinks she’s invisible here.

We sometimes call her Izza-belly….I’m sure you can see why.

  1. Oh, poor kitty! I wish her well and healing; here’s hoping for good outcomes! I have a soft spot in my heart for tabby cats; my black and tan tabby Feisty reigned the house for 17+ years. They are a good, sturdy breed (and that tummy fur, so deliciously soft!)

  2. Aw, sorry to hear about bad stuff, but yay for good labwork – I hope everything turns out OK. Lots of love to you both x

  3. Thanks for all you love. Izzy and I both appreciate it so much!

Just to let you know that ALL her labwork came back great, so there’s no evidence that if it is cancer that is has spread.

Next step is to go to an eye specialist…will keep you all posted.

  4. Sorry to hear about your kitty 🙁 I am going through something similar with my baby :ahem: cat of 17 years. I’m hoping for the best for Izz-belly too!

PS: the picture of her under the rug is adorable

  5. Poor Isabella (and you!) – I hope the eye specialist is able to help. I can’t get over how much she looks like my cat Lucy – even though their tabby markings are different (and Lucy’s got a spotty tummy) their faces and colouring and eyes are so similar – so I really feel for you like it’s Lucy up there and I can’t even think how I’d be feeling right now if it were. We’ll be thinking of you!

  6. That’s heartbreaking. I’m so sorry that the two of you have to go through this. I hope for many more years to come.

  7. Awww, it’s nerve wracking isn’t it? I hope it all goes well with your Izza-belly.

  8. Oh, thinking good thoughts for your and your furry one. It’s so hard, isn’t it? Maybe it will all turn out for the best! I’m a bit of a lurker, but I do love your blog! I have a vintage Etsy shop and think I need to advertise, and this seems like a lovely place to do so! Cheers.

  9. Izzy you’re beautiful, you remind me of my bestest girl who is no longer with us. Sending lots of good thoughts and perhaps a nose rub or tummy tickle (depending on what you like?) your way!

  10. Dont worry! my cat started with a little spot just like that and now has all her eye coveres. She has a perfectly healthy, happy life..she is almost 15 years now..sleeps all day..She sees perfectly well..nothing changed in her life. Izzy will be all right. Good Luck! (this could be a good excuse to spoil your cat a little bit more!)

  11. Aww I’m sorry about your kitty! Good luck when you go to the specialist–you may be surprised at what vets can do these days for animals if you have the financial means. *hugs*

  12. I’m so sorry. I’ve got two fur-babies of my own and know how worrying it is when they get sick. If they have to remove the eye, although shocking, it’s not horrible. I’ve seen a lot of one-eyed kitties at the local shelter. I hope that’s an option so she can be melanoma-free.

  13. She looks like such a sweetie! I’m so sorry, Jen. I hope it’s not melanoma, and that it’s something benign instead. Please keep us posted!

  14. My cat Sparky has similar spots that have grown in size and the vet has never said anything about them. He’s had them for years and years and he’s fine. Hopefully it’s no cause for alarm. Izzy is quite a cutie!
