Stand on a bench. Make sure it’s Monday. Wear something pretty.

I don’t know when the 1st person decided to take self-portraits of themselves will standing on something, wearing pretty clothes and with interesting backgrounds…and I don’t care. I do know that the Flickr Group  Bench Monday popularized it. I’m just glad someone started the trend, because I love it.

One of the best I’ve come across is Heidi Lender’s Once Upon series. Heidi started her self-imposed weekly Bench Monday photo challenge to “Stand on a bench. Make sure it’s Monday. Wear something pretty,” but found that it turned into more than just a photography assignment for her. It became a tale of self-discovery, an exploration into the ego and how fashion can change and mold the characters we show the world.

I’m smitten. And there’s a little dog too!
