The spirit of handmade

I was discussing why handmade is better with Mr. Indie Fixx over the weekend.  We were actually having a conversation about my post from the week before, Quality over Quantity.  My position:  handmade is better because it isfilled with an essence. This essence has a certain je ne sais quoi quality that’s almost like the–in this time of winter holidays—like the spirit of handmade.  Handmade goods, whether those you make yourself or those you buy from handmade sellers, are lovingly made by people who care about what they do and who also care about the people who use & enjoy their goods. That caring is embodied in the goods themselves and when those goods are gifted and used, that spirit of handmadeness is released and it makes everyone a little bit happier.

Now, isn’t that reason enough to buy and make handmade?

  1. I absolutely agree! I also love getting to know the artist behind the product… it makes me feel even more of a connection.

  2. I had a similar conversation with my better half today. Receiving a handmade gift is so special, because it’s usually tailored to the individual. Like you said, it shows the love and care. Plus quality reflects on the maker, so buying handmade items means most likely getting something well made, reputations of the “little people” are at stake. It’s just special. Lovely sentiments in your post Jen!
