I’ve featured Melanie Favreau’s work before on Indie Fixx, but today she’s the featured artist for my Wednesday Indie Artist Fixx interview series.
What’s the name of your business, what do create and sell and how did you get your start?
My business is called Melanie Favreau Jeweller/Joailliere and I make sterling silver jewelry. I got my diploma from the Montreal Jewelry School in 2001, worked for other jewelers full time for five + years and then decided it was time to make my own jewelry line.
What’s your creative process like?
My creative process is pretty simple. Sometimes I like to draw the piece just to get the feel of it and the proportions, but most of the time it seems like the metal is telling me what to do! When I make a new design I like to work as quickly as possible, so I don’t think about it too much.
Who are 3 of your favorite artists of all times?
Warhol, Marcel Duchamp and Boris Vian.
What have you recently been reading, watching and listening to?
I decided that there’s a few classics that I should read so, I’m now reading Madame Bovary. My absolute favorite TV show is Mad Men and after watching the movie Juno for the second time, I decided to get the soundtrack which I’ve listened to almost every day for about 2 weeks now.
What’s the best thing about what you do? And the worst?
That’s an easy question. I don’t have a boss telling me what to do and this is, by far, the best thing ever! I deeply recommend it. The worst thing–tax time, but that’s just once a year.
When did you get your start and what made you decide to take the plunge?
When I found out about Etsy three years ago, I knew right away that I wanted to sell my jewelry online. So, I made a little collection of about twenty items, took some pictures, posted them in my new Etsy shop and I got my first sale one week later!
What’s been your biggest accomplishment so far?
My biggest accomplishment so far…I got my 1000th items sold only in my Etsy shop! For me, that’s amazing!
What 3 things can’t you live without?
My computer, my jewelry bench and my lip balm.
