About 2 weeks ago I planted my seeds from High Mowing Seeds and as my reward I now have the cutest little seedlings. I planted broccoli, kale, arugula and spinach and, according to my calculations, in 4 – 6 weeks I should be swimming in greens. I can’t wait and I hope it all turns out and doesn’t go the way my tomato plants went. My 6 tomato plants were infected with early blight, but I was able to save the first crop of them by spraying a mixture of Epsom salts, baking soda, a little dish soap and water on them to raise the pH.
Here are some of my kale seedlings. This is the variety I am growing. It’s supposed to be hardy and grow quickly. I’m thinking I may be able to get another planting in this season if all goes well.
Even though my tomatoes were mostly ruined, I do have to say that this gardening thing has been pretty easy. No knowledge of rocket science has been required and no need to spray toxic chemicals either. One does have to be ready for a certain amount of disappointment and be ready to get a little dirty, but the food that has come out our garden has been some of the tastiest I’ve ever had. Fresh picked organic food really does beat any of that stuff you can buy from the grocery store. In fact, the broccoli I grew this summer was so amazing, it almost tasted like a different food from the stuff I’ve had all my life. It is not bitter at all when you pick it and eat it right away.
Plus, the food we have grown has helped us save money. I plan on having a garden every spring, summer & fall from now on! And hopefully will expand it once we move into a new house.
My arugula seedlings are just so adorable, aren’t they? I am growing this variety, I liked that is is more cold tolerant than the cultivated varieties.
