12 Days of Indie Holiday Shopping: Whitney Smith

Ceramic artist Whitney Smith is today’s featured ‘12 Days of Indie Holiday Shopping’ artist and I couldn’t be more pleased.  I featured Whitney’s work back is April and I’ve seriously been coveting her work since then.

Inspired by nature, Art Nouveau & the Arts & Crafts Movement, Whitney creates simple & whimsical, yet sensual forms. Her work often incorporates flowers and her glazes remind me of pottery that my great-grandmother owned and which she collected back in the days of the Great Depression. I would be really hard pressed to come up with favorites from Whitney, but since I know you want to know, I’ve put together a little montage (below) of some of the pieces that I like from Whitney’s current work.

Take a look at her work for yourself on her website and in her Etsy Shop and come up with your own favorites. Share those favorites and be entered in to a drawing to win a Bird Bowl from Whitney Smith (pictured below).

To win: Leave a comment below with your favorite Whitney Smith designs. Multiple entries will be accepted, but you must leave a comment for each entry. This will increase your chances for winning!

I will choose one random commenter to win the prize. This contest ends tomorrow morning, November 21st at 11am.

THE ENTRY PERIOD FOR THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED! Stay tuned for the winner. Click here to enter the current ’12 Days of Indie Holiday Shopping’ Contest.

  1. One last thing – I love the bud creamer. Oh my. What a nice shape. Just begging to be held. tinawittmer(at)yahoo(dot)com

  2. It’s a good thing you’re giving away a bird bowl because I think it is my most favorite of all. That would make a lovely Christmas present for my mother!

  3. The eight nestling lotus bowls is another unique item. I would never find myself using them and taking away from the beauty of the piece. Whitney truly uses her ideas to create wonderful pieces of work.

  4. The bird bowl in milk white is unique and I could see a flower floating in the bowl or even a floating candle to accent the birds on the lip of the bowl.

  5. The datura vase in fern green filled with flowers would look elegant on any table or mattel for that matter.

  6. The split pods as shown in her gallery, can’t have just one, would have to have them set up as she has them. In either chocolate brown or I can imagine glossy black!

  7. I love the brilliant color of the poppy red pomegranate. It would brighten any room up and I could see it in mine.

  8. Several of Whitney’s pieces catches my eye – the first one would be “sprout” in chocolate brown. Even in the eggshell color would satisfy me.

  14. The bird bowl is perfect – I have a large bowl roughly similar (tho not as elegant) which I use as a water bowl for wild birds. This one I could admire indoors.

  26. All of these are so lovely. I think I’m most in love with the cupcake stand and I love the idea of buying myself a cupcake as a special treat and sitting down and presenting it to myself.

  27. I’ve never seen this pottery before and I am completely struck by it. My grandmother has been gone for 20 years, but she was born in 1900 and was a botanist and an ornithologist. Arts & crafts/art nouveau was her period, and that is one of my favorite times aesthetically. Whitney Smith’s work is incredible. My grandmother had two dogwood trees she loved, so the dogwood cake stand and dessert plates are amazing.

  28. I thought I left a comment but I can’t find it…!

I love everything and anything with the dogwood blooms- and that red plate above it just super gorgeous.

  29. The cupcake stand (blue) with the cherry blossom bell jar would probably house many a muffin/breakfast treat in my home–and cause a lot of pounds to be added to my waistline!

  30. 2nd choice is the Red Poppy plate which would HAVE to be used so frequently because of the gorgeous color!

  31. Oh my. I would HAVE to say that the butterfly and flower cake stand is a gorgeous piece which I cannot ever afford, but if I did would be surely used at least once a week!

  32. Love the bird dessert plate. So simple and elegant. A pal to share dessert with but you don’t really have to share! ;o)

  33. Gee I could keep at this forever. Whitney’s work is just amazing! My last fave thing I am going to put down is the dogwood teacup and saucer. Of course another thing I’d love to get for my Grandmother.

  34. Her cake plates are so beauitful I found another one I like 11″ (w/ 6 flowers). in milk white

  35. I really love the way she’s brought natural inspirations into pieces with simple and elegant line and form. Short the bird bowls (I have a Bird Thing), I love the nesting Lotus Bowls. Why shouldn’t the practical be beautiful?

  36. I just Love her lotus flower nesting bowls! I could use those all over the house for keys, and fruit, and maybe a few dog treats! they match most any decor. Not too “pretty” but very beautiful.

  37. I have loved Whitney Smith’s work for a long time. I could look at the shapes – especially the sprouts – and the colors (poppies) for hours. There’s something very calming and cheerful about them.

  38. I also love the Large bird cake stand. As you can see, i’m having trouble choosing. Whitney’s pottery is really beautiful!

  39. I have no problem whatsoever choosing my favourite! It’s the nesting lotus bowls … they were one of the first things I ever hearted on Etsy! 🙂

  40. and the dogwood dessert plate- i would have to keep a constant supply of desserts to show off that thing! i’d gain weight if i owned that plate! haha
