You may have already seen it, but I just got a catch to see the video by Annie Leonard called The Story of Stuff. In the video, Annie describes the linear model of goods production and distribution and all the hidden costs. Hidden costs like the alarming rate of destruction of the world’s natural resources, the health of workers who produce goods made with toxic chemicals, the collective shallowness we feel as consumers buying so much throw away mass-produced crap from mega MCcorporations.
So, watch The Story of Stuff and pass it around to your family, friends, coworkers and think about the stuff you buy, where it comes from and where it goes when you are done with it. Leave some comments too with any thoughts you have after watching the video and checking out the website.
I recently decided to become a Vegan which means, amongst other things, incorporating a heightened sense of awareness about whats in my food, if its been tested on animals, how much impact my purchases have on the environment, and whether or not my clothes have been manufactured in sweatshops etc. Its alot of work and I’m just getting started. But even in the last few days since I made this life altering decision, I have felt so good about every meal I eat and every purchase I make. I’m no longer angsty (even subconsciously) about my consumer choices.
I’m not out to convert people to Veganism, but I saw this post of yours and agree with it so much! Thank you for the referral to that movie.
p.s. On my blog and on the Peta Website there is a list of companies that do and don’t test on animals for bath and beauty products.
